Compare the estimated total cost of opening, holding and closing the same hypothetical position. Include spread, commission, financing and any account-currency conversion. A low advertised spread is only one input, and a cost estimate does not predict a profitable trade. Margin FX and other leveraged products can produce substantial losses.

Assume a EUR/USD position of EUR 100,000, a USD account, a 1-pip round-trip spread cost and a pip value of USD 10 for this specific pair and size. Commission is USD 3 per side, overnight financing is USD 5 per night for two chargeable nights, and a separate applicable conversion charge is USD 2. These figures are invented for learning, not actual provider pricing. Different instruments, contract sizes and account currencies require a different pip-value calculation.
Spread is embedded in the difference between buy and sell prices. In this example, count the stated round-trip spread once, not again on each side. Commission per side is charged twice for one opening and one closing. Financing depends on position direction, rate, rollover time and calendar treatment. Some products have multiple-day charges on a particular rollover; use the schedule rather than assuming every calendar night costs the same. Conversion may apply to realised profit, loss or other amounts rather than the entire trade value, so identify its base before calculating.
In this example, USD 2 is an assumed one-off conversion of non-USD funding into USD, allocated to the scenario. The price-based EUR/USD profit or loss is already in USD, so no extra conversion of that result is assumed. Exclude the fee if it does not apply.
| Component | Assumption | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Spread | 1 pip × USD 10 | USD 10 |
| Commission | USD 3 × 2 sides | USD 6 |
| Financing | USD 5 × 2 chargeable nights | USD 10 |
| Conversion | Separate applicable charge | USD 2 |
| Total | 10 + 6 + 10 + 2 | USD 28 |
The USD 28 total is separate from market profit or loss and excludes slippage, taxes, withdrawal charges and other fees not assumed here. If the gross market result were a hypothetical USD 40 gain, this simplified net would be USD 12. With a USD 40 loss, it would be a USD 68 loss. Neither outcome is a forecast. For an account comparison, keep pair, size, direction, holding period and currency identical, and obtain quotes at comparable times. An account with lower spread can be more expensive after commission or financing. Moneysmart’s Australian educational pages identify these cost categories and leverage risk; they are not a price list for your provider.
Your country of residence, the provider’s contracting entity, the product and your customer classification all matter. A rule described by a UK, Australian or US regulator is an example within that jurisdiction, not a promise that the same protection applies elsewhere. Use the current local regulator’s website and the terms that actually govern your account. If you are unsure which entity or law applies, obtain a written explanation before committing money.
Keep a comparison record containing the date, product name, contract version, relevant amounts and the answers you receive. A screenshot of an advertisement is useful context, but it cannot replace the binding terms or an official register. Recheck before acting because rates, charges and permissions can change. Reviews can highlight questions about service quality, but they cannot establish a licence, a guaranteed return or your legal entitlement. This guide is general education; the numerical examples are editorial assumptions, not live quotations, and no provider is recommended.
No. Commissions, financing, conversion or other charges may still apply. Read the complete tariff and contract.
No. Cost and investment risk are different. Leverage, price movement and provider failure can still cause losses.
