When you initiate a withdrawal and the status remains "processing" for more than a day, it's a situation that often leads many to immediately think of the worst-case scenario. However, most withdrawal requests that haven't reached the account are held up by system conditions or contractual terms that traders agreed to when opening their accounts. Not all cases are serious.
The problem is that hardly anyone explains what these conditions are, where they come from, or how long one should wait before considering it abnormal. This article systematically lists the reasons why you might not be able to withdraw Forex funds, along with the steps you should take when your money hasn't arrived, and channels to escalate the issue based on the service provider's jurisdiction.
A single withdrawal request always goes through two sides. The first side is the internal approval by the service provider, which usually takes a few hours to two business days. The second side is the actual money transfer via banks or payment service providers, which have their own processing cycles and do not operate on holidays. A request approved after Friday's cut-off time might only be processed on Monday, even if there's nothing wrong with the system.
The withdrawal method used also makes a significant difference in processing time. Transfers back to credit or debit cards are often the slowest because they must go through the card network and the issuing bank's systems. E-wallets are typically the fastest.
There are two practical dividing lines. First, is the transaction still within the timeframe announced by the service provider itself? Second, when inquired, did you receive a clear explanation stating the reason and timeframe? If it exceeds the announced timeframe and there's no written explanation, that's the point where you should switch from waiting to formally submitting a complaint.
The table below summarizes the most common reasons, along with what traders can check themselves before contacting anyone.
| Reason | What Causes It | What to Do | Reasonable Timeframe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incomplete Identity Verification | Expired documents, unclear images, or address not matching registration | Submit new documents in the specified format and wait for the status to change to approved | 1 to 3 business days after submitting complete documents |
| Transaction under AML review | Deposit/withdrawal patterns meet conditions requiring additional system review, e.g., depositing and immediately requesting a withdrawal with little to no trading | Provide requested information to the review department truthfully and ask for the review timeframe | Several days to several weeks, depending on complexity |
| Withdrawal method does not match deposit method | Requirement to return funds to the original source first; excess funds can then go to other channels | Split the request into two items: the amount equal to the deposit returns to the original source, and the profit goes to a supported channel | Resolved immediately upon submitting a new request via the correct channel |
| Subject to bonus or credit conditions | Bonus amount tied to trading volume conditions that have not yet been met | Read the terms of the accepted promotion and calculate the actual withdrawable amount | Depends on conditions; no fixed timeframe |
| Insufficient Free Margin | There are open positions; a portion of funds is held as collateral | Close or reduce the size of some positions, then check the new free margin figure before requesting a withdrawal | Immediately upon closing positions |
| Amount below minimum or insufficient for fees | Insufficient balance for the withdrawal amount plus the channel's fees | Reduce the requested withdrawal amount to leave a buffer for fees | Immediately |
| Destination account name does not match trading account owner | Rule prohibiting transfers to third parties | Change to a destination account with the same name as the trading account holder | Immediately upon submitting a new request |
| Technical issue with the payment service provider | Payment channel undergoing maintenance or destination bank rejected the transaction | Request the transaction reference number and inquire with the destination bank concurrently | 1 to 5 business days |
Being asked for additional documents during withdrawal, even though they weren't requested during deposit, is one of the most frustrating issues. The underlying mechanism is the Know Your Customer (KYC) process under anti-money laundering (AML) laws, which requires financial service providers to know their customers' identities and monitor the reasonableness of transactions throughout the relationship, not just when opening an account. Some providers allow deposits and trading to begin before document verification is complete, then close that loophole when a withdrawal request comes in.
Within the framework of European regulatory bodies like CySEC, clear guidelines are established: if a service provider fails to complete the customer verification process, funds must be returned to the original account used by the customer for deposit, not to other destinations, as summarized in SALVUS Funds' analysis on CySEC Circular C367. In the context of Thailand, the direct authority overseeing anti-money laundering laws is the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO).
Unclear, incomplete, or misspelled documents (not matching official records) cause the verification cycle to restart every time, which is a variable traders can control themselves.
This rule is not established to prevent withdrawals, but stems from the same principle mentioned above. Returning funds to the original source allows the money's path to be traceable and eliminates the possibility of a trading account being used as a conduit to move funds from one channel to another.
In practice, the amount equivalent to the original deposit usually must be returned to the card or account used for the deposit. Any profit exceeding that amount can then be transferred to other supported channels.
The figures displayed on the screen represent three different values: Balance is the remaining amount from closed transactions; Equity is the account value including profit/loss from open positions; and Free Margin is the actual remaining amount after deducting collateral for open positions. This last value is the ceiling for the withdrawable amount.
When orders are still open, the system always reserves a portion of funds. Withdrawing too much, leaving insufficient collateral, can also push the account closer to a margin call or forced liquidation. This mechanism is explained in detail in What is a Margin Call, When Does It Occur, and How to Prevent It?, and the proportion of collateral required depends on the leverage used, which is covered in What is Forex Leverage and How Risky Is It?
Amounts in the account originating from bonuses or promotional credits typically do not have the same status as a trader's own deposits. A common condition is that a specified trading volume must be met before that portion can be withdrawn. Some conditions also state that withdrawing before fulfilling the requirements will result in the entire bonus amount being removed from the account.
The details of these conditions are explained separately in Can Forex Trading Bonuses Really Be Withdrawn? Conditions to Know Before Accepting. The key point to remember for withdrawal cases is that the amount displayed in the account and the actual withdrawable amount may be different, and this difference can usually be explained by the terms and conditions accepted when receiving the promotion.
Withdrawal requests rejected due to insufficient funds often occur with accounts holding overnight positions continuously, as overnight holding fees are deducted from the account every night. This means the amount calculated yesterday might not match today's balance. The method for calculating these fees is explained in What is a Swap Fee? How to Calculate Overnight Forex Swap Fees.
Furthermore, each withdrawal channel has its own minimum withdrawal amount and fees. Requesting to withdraw the full amount without leaving a buffer for fees can therefore cause the entire transaction to fail.
1. Complete your own checks first. Review your identity verification status, free margin balance, chosen withdrawal method, minimum withdrawal amount, and any outstanding promotion conditions. Most issues are resolved at this stage.
2. Contact customer service with complete information. Provide your account number, transaction date and time, amount, method, and transaction reference number. Asking vaguely why the money hasn't arrived unnecessarily prolongs the response time.
3. Request a written explanation and timeframe. Ask for details on which step the request is stuck, what additional documents are needed, and when it is expected to be completed. Keep records of all conversations and screenshots, as these are the only evidence usable in the next step.
4. Submit a formal complaint. Regulated service providers must have published complaint procedures. Use that channel instead of negotiating via chat, as following the formal process provides a timeframe and official record for the issue.
5. Escalate to the regulatory authority overseeing that service provider. This is based on the jurisdiction specified in their license. For example, the UK has procedures outlined in the FCA's complaint guidance, where DISP 1.6 of the FCA Handbook sets an 8-week timeframe for companies to respond to complaints. In Australia, suspicious conduct can be reported via ASIC's reporting channels.
It's crucial to understand that these complaint channels are tied to the service provider's jurisdiction, not the country where the trader resides. Service providers without any regulatory license therefore have no central authority to escalate issues to, which is why checking the license status should happen before depositing funds, not after a problem arises.
Complete all identity verification documents before making your first deposit. This step eliminates the number one cause of issues.
Use only payment methods registered in your own name, and use the same method for both deposits and withdrawals if possible. This will reduce the chance of encountering conditions requiring funds to be returned to the original source.
Read the promotion terms and conditions before accepting, not when you're about to withdraw. Once accepted, bonuses often cannot be retroactively canceled without affecting your account balance.

Important Note: Forex trading is not yet licensed or regulated by any authority in Thailand. The Bank of Thailand does not have a policy to issue licenses for retail Forex businesses (Reference: Thai PBS), and the SEC itself confirms that the Forex business is not under its supervision but rather under foreign exchange control laws (Reference: The Standard).

How long does a Forex withdrawal usually take?
There is no standard timeframe applicable to all service providers. Generally, internal approval takes a few hours to two business days, plus another one to five business days for the bank or payment service provider, depending on the method. The actual reference timeframe is what your specific service provider announces in their terms and conditions.
Why do brokers ask for additional documents during withdrawal, even if they didn't during deposit?
Because the customer verification process under anti-money laundering laws is an ongoing duty, not a one-time step during registration. Some providers allow trading to begin before document verification is complete, and the withdrawal request then becomes the point where the system enforces closing that loophole.
Can I withdraw to a different method than the one I used for deposit?
The amount equivalent to the original deposit usually must be returned to the same source from which it was deposited. Any profit exceeding that amount can then be transferred to other supported channels. If the original account or card is closed, you must notify them with bank evidence and await case-by-case consideration.
I see funds in my portfolio, but I can't withdraw them. What's causing this?
The most common reason is that the amount you see is Balance or Equity, which includes funds held as collateral for open positions. The actual withdrawable amount is your Free Margin. Another case is when a portion of the funds is a bonus still subject to trading volume conditions.
If contacting the service provider doesn't lead to progress, what should I do next?
Gather all evidence, including withdrawal requests, communication records, and responses received, then submit a complaint following the procedures published by the service provider. If no resolution is reached, escalate the issue to the regulatory authority based on the jurisdiction specified in their license. In cases involving anti-money laundering offenses in Thailand, the directly relevant channel is the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO).
Most pending withdrawal requests can be explained by one of the 8 reasons listed above, and more than half are issues that traders can check and resolve themselves. Understanding the origin of each rule—including customer verification requirements, promotion conditions, and collateral mechanisms—helps distinguish between normal procedures and issues that warrant formal escalation. The most impactful actions always occur before the first deposit, from completing identity verification to checking license status to know in advance which authorities can handle disputes if they arise.
