Founded in 1995 and formerly owned by the VCU Health System, Virginia Premier Health Plan, Inc. was a managed care organization dedicated to providing quality and accessible healthcare coverage to low-income and vulnerable populations across Virginia. The company offered a range of health insurance products, including Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, and plans on the Health Insurance Marketplace. In 2020, Virginia Premier was acquired by Sentara Healthcare and merged with its existing health plan, Optima Health. The combined entity has been rebranded as Sentara Health Plans, continuing to serve Virginia's communities.
