Surrendering a cash-value life policy means giving up the contract for the amount available under its terms. That amount is not automatically the premiums paid, the death benefit or an old sales illustration. Before instructing a surrender, ask for a dated written quote and check what cover will end.
This TrustFinance™ guide helps you organise that decision. It does not recommend surrendering, borrowing or replacing a policy. The named MoneySense sources describe Singapore insurance products. Your actual contract, ownership, country and current circumstances still determine the applicable conditions.
MoneySense explains that early surrender can produce less than the premiums paid, or no cash value. Participating-policy projections can change, and a quoted surrender amount can include only part of declared bonuses. Identify the policy type and distinguish guaranteed amounts from projected or conditional components. Do not assume every life policy builds cash value.
A current value statement and a net payout quote can use different bases. Ask whether charges, a policy loan and accrued interest are already deducted. MoneySense’s whole-life guidance notes that a loan against cash value bears interest. Its universal-life guidance distinguishes surrender charges and the ending of cover; those product examples are not universal fee schedules.
Assume a fictional written quote lists a value of 1,000 neutral currency units before three separate deductions: a surrender charge of 50, loan principal of 200 and accrued loan interest of 10. The arithmetic is 1,000 - 50 - 200 - 10 = 740. No tax, currency conversion, other charge or previous withdrawal is included. This is a record-reconciliation example, not a method for valuing a real policy.
If a real quote already calls 740 the net amount after those items, subtracting them again would be wrong. Ask for each deduction’s basis, date and clause, and clarify whether an amount can change before completion. A positive quoted amount does not prove approval or money received. Keep an actual payment record separately.
Full surrender, partial withdrawal, a policy loan and a contract-specific paid-up option are different decisions. Ask what is actually available and how each affects benefits, premiums, charges and debt. None is automatically free or suitable. Confirm the effective ending date for the main cover and riders. If considering replacement, check acceptance, terms and any gap before assuming new cover will match the old policy. Do not treat a quote request as cancellation or stop premiums without checking the consequences.
Keep the dated contract, schedule, endorsements and ownership or assignment information. Confirm who can instruct a surrender and whether another party’s consent is needed.
Record the valuation date, validity period, guaranteed and non-guaranteed components, conditions and stated net amount. An illustration is not a current promise.
Match principal, accrued interest and each charge to the quote. Check which items are included already, and ask about unresolved deductions or tax questions.
Retain the explanation of benefit and rider changes, effective end date and any replacement conditions. Ask an appropriately qualified adviser about personal consequences when needed.
Keep the instruction acknowledgment, completion notice and bank credit. Submission, acceptance, cover ending and cash arrival are separate facts; no universal payment deadline is assumed.
Not automatically. The policy’s protection, costs and savings features have different roles. Use the actual surrender terms and dated quote, not a premium total as an entitlement.
No such assumption is safe. Interest and debt can affect available value and benefits. Ask for the actual conditions and repayment consequences before treating a loan as an alternative.
