An open-ended fund offering regular dealing does not provide unconditional access to cash. Its investments may be difficult to sell at reasonable prices, and the applicable rules and fund documents may permit restrictions. A submitted order, a published NAV and a payment in your bank account are different facts. Check each before relying on a redemption for a particular cash need.
This TrustFinance™ guide compares the evidence behind those facts. It focuses on investor redemptions from open-ended funds, not deposit accounts or every exchange-traded product. The cover separates asset liquidity from investor dealing terms; neither document promises an exit. The example below is fictional. Your exact fund, share class, jurisdiction and current notice determine the applicable conditions.
Asset liquidity concerns whether holdings can be sold, in the required quantity and timeframe, without an unreasonable price impact. Investor liquidity concerns the terms on which you can request redemption and receive proceeds. A daily dealing frequency does not make an illiquid holding immediately saleable. The FSB: liquidity mismatch recommendations, 2023 identifies this possible mismatch and recommends consistency between assets and redemption terms in normal and stressed conditions.
Read the current prospectus, dealing terms and relevant portfolio disclosures together. A low duration, high credit rating or published cash percentage is not a complete cash-access test. Those measures do not identify every obligation, restriction or asset-sale cost. FSB recommendations are international policy recommendations for authorities, not automatically enforceable rights for an individual investor.
Normal timing: the cutoff, valuation point and settlement timetable describe different parts of ordinary dealing. Meeting a cutoff does not establish that the order has been priced or that cash has arrived. Check holidays, time zones, distributor deadlines and the conditions that can interrupt the normal timetable.
Notice or deferral: a notice requirement concerns advance instruction; a deferral changes when processing takes place under the relevant terms. Do not assume that every delayed request stays in a queue, retains an earlier price or carries forward automatically. Ask what happens to this particular request.
Gate or partial processing: a gate limits redemptions under its specified basis. Read the actual measurement period, scope and allocation method rather than translating a fund-level limit into your personal entitlement. A request may be only partly processed. The unprocessed part needs its own documented treatment.
Suspension: dealing may be temporarily stopped for the affected transactions. The Thai SEC: liquidity risk management tools distinguishes restrictions on orders from tools that allocate transaction costs, and describes suspension that can concern accepted orders as well as stopping new instructions. This is a Thai summary, not a universal rule. Check the actual notice for which subscriptions, redemptions or earlier instructions are affected.
Costs and separated assets: liquidity fees, swing pricing and anti-dilution levies concern liquidity-related costs or pricing. A side pocket separates specified assets or their treatment under the relevant arrangement. Neither is simply another name for a gate or total suspension. The availability, trigger and consequences of each tool depend on the fund and current applicable rules. No fixed fee, cap, notice period or suspension maximum is assumed here.
Save the official notice with its publication time, effective time, timezone and version. Match the fund, identifier and share class. Identify the reason stated, affected transactions, treatment of existing orders, valuation basis, fees, contact channel and next communication. A review date or promised update is not a reopening date or guaranteed payment date.
The FCA: fund suspension guidance, UK, 2016, published in 2016 in the UK, discusses fair valuation and the interests of investors who remain in a fund as well as those redeeming. Its revised-valuation example includes communication about cancellation options. That example does not create an unconditional cancellation right everywhere. Find the options actually stated for your order; do not infer that suspension fixes the price, prevents losses or guarantees a fair outcome.
Assume a fictional investor requested redemption of 100 units. A fictional confirmation explicitly says that 40 units have been processed and separately identifies 60 units as unresolved. The recordkeeping arithmetic is 100 - 40 = 60 units. These are invented status facts, not a real fund, a regulatory 40% gate or an assumed allocation rule.
Do not multiply all 100 units by the last displayed NAV and call the result cash available. This example supplies no valuation, fees, tax, currency or cash amount. Even the confirmation that 40 units were processed does not establish that proceeds have reached the bank account. Obtain the applicable price and settlement evidence separately.
For the remaining 60 units, record what the actual notice and confirmation say. They might require deferral, cancellation, resubmission or some other treatment; the example chooses none. It assumes no automatic carryover, priority, pro-rata allocation, future NAV or reopening date. “Unresolved” means that further evidence is needed, not that the units or their value are protected.
Keep the exact fund, identifier, share class and dated prospectus or dealing terms. Record jurisdiction, ordinary dealing frequency, notice requirements and stated exceptions.
Save the relevant holdings or risk disclosure, its date and its limitations. Ask how normal and stressed conditions differ; do not infer access from a single portfolio statistic.
Save the official current notice and its effective scope. Note affected orders, pricing conditions, next communication and any unresolved wording.
Retain the acknowledgment and actual processing confirmation, quantities and applicable valuation. Submission, acceptance and processing labels are not interchangeable.
Match confirmed proceeds with actual receipt. Track unresolved units separately and obtain their treatment in writing. A partial payment does not settle every instruction.
If documents conflict, ask the official fund manager or distributor which dated terms and notice apply to your specific class and instruction. Use a verified contact channel and keep the answer with your request. Do not send sensitive account documents to an unverified contact or assume a different distributor can bypass a fund-wide restriction.
Check the product structure before applying this worksheet. The SEC Investor.gov: US ETF structure, 2023 explains that retail investors in the described US ETFs trade shares on an exchange, while authorized participants generally create or redeem with the fund. Exchange price can differ from NAV and a trading market is not guaranteed. A retail exchange sale is not the same transaction as primary redemption. Other structures and jurisdictions need their own terms.
Regular dealing describes ordinary terms, not an unconditional payout promise. Restrictions may be available under the applicable rules and fund documents. Check the notice and your order status; no universal duration or automatic reopening is established by this guide.
No such conclusion follows from the restriction alone. Suspension, liquidation, issuer default and a loss in value are different matters. Read the stated reason and subsequent official notices. Access and value can both remain uncertain; suspension is not a guarantee against loss.
Sources were checked on 26 October 2026. FSB policy recommendations are dated 20 December 2023; FCA guidance is dated 8 July 2016; the US ETF bulletin is dated 23 February 2023. The Thai SEC summary supplies qualitative tool distinctions, not a consolidated legal opinion. Its separate 2026 consultation is not used as evidence of enacted changes. Access dates do not change publication dates, and a translated edition does not change the governing jurisdiction.
Use the existing guides for pricing mechanics and broader risk reading. This guide is general financial education, not a personal fund recommendation or instruction to redeem. Unanswered conditions remain unanswered until supported by the relevant documents.
