Originally founded in 2006 as a non-bank financial institution (SOFOM), Bankaool became the first fully licensed online bank in Mexico in 2012. The company positioned itself as an "agrotech" pioneer, aiming to serve the underbanked agricultural sector with digital-first solutions, including loans, checking accounts, and investment products for individuals and businesses. However, after facing financial difficulties and failing to comply with regulatory capital requirements, Mexico's banking commission revoked its license in September 2023, and the institution is currently in a state of liquidation.
