Founded in 2003 by hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, UniRush, LLC aimed to provide financial empowerment and access to modern payment systems for individuals without traditional banking relationships. Its flagship product was the RushCard, a prepaid Visa debit card that allowed users to direct deposit paychecks, make purchases, and withdraw cash from ATMs. The company experienced a major crisis in October 2015 when a technology migration failed, locking tens of thousands of customers out of their accounts for days. This event led to regulatory scrutiny and significant reputational damage. In February 2017, UniRush, LLC's RushCard business was acquired by Green Dot Corporation for approximately $147 million. Green Dot eventually phased out the RushCard program.
