It allows cardholders to make secure point-of-sale (POS) purchases and withdraw cash from ATMs worldwide, with transactions being directly debited from the cardholder's linked bank account. For decades, it has been a prominent payment brand, particularly in Europe. However, as of 2023, Mastercard is phasing out the Maestro brand in the European region, replacing new, lost, or expired cards with its Debit Mastercard product to offer wider acceptance and better support for online e-commerce transactions.
