Historically, it provided insurance on municipal bonds and structured finance products, including collateralized debt obligations (CDOs). Following significant financial distress during the 2008 financial crisis due to its exposure to subprime mortgages, the company was ordered to cease writing new business and entered into an "orderly run-off" to manage its existing portfolio of insured obligations to maturity.
