Founded in 2011, Metromile, Inc. was an insurtech company that disrupted the traditional car insurance model by offering pay-per-mile insurance. Its business model was designed for low-mileage drivers, who could save money by paying a low base rate plus a per-mile fee, tracked via a plug-in telematics device called the Metromile Pulse. The company went public in February 2021. In July 2022, Metromile was acquired by Lemonade, Inc., and its technology and data are now integrated into Lemonade's new car insurance product, Lemonade Car. Metromile no longer offers new policies under its own brand.
