Originally founded in 1908 as Commercial Investment Trust (CIT), the company grew into a significant commercial lending and financing institution. After a post-financial crisis restructuring, it established CIT Bank as a national online bank. In January 2022, CIT Group Inc. was acquired by and merged with First-Citizens Bank & Trust Company. Today, the CIT Bank brand operates as a key division of First Citizens Bank, focusing on providing digital-first banking services to consumers nationwide, including savings accounts, money market accounts, and certificates of deposit (CDs), alongside its legacy of commercial financing.
