Founded in 2012, Tugende (which means "let's go" in the Luganda language) is a technology-enabled asset financing company. Its mission is to empower entrepreneurs and help them "help themselves" by enabling them to own income-generating assets. The company started by offering lease-to-own financing for motorcycle taxis (boda bodas) in Uganda and has since expanded to Kenya. Tugende's core product is a hire-purchase package that includes the asset, training, safety equipment, and support, allowing clients to build a verifiable credit history and ultimately own the asset, leading to economic empowerment.
