Founded in 1958, Allied Capital Corporation was one of the largest and oldest business development companies in the United States. It operated as a private equity and mezzanine firm, providing long-term debt and equity investment capital to support management and leveraged buyouts, recapitalizations, and growth financings for a diverse range of middle-market companies. As a BDC, it was regulated under the Investment Company Act of 1940. The company was publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker symbol ALD until it was acquired by Ares Capital Corporation (NASDAQ: ARCC) in a transaction that closed in April 2010.
