Whrrl
Information by Research TrustFinance
Whrrl, developed by Pelago, Inc., was a pioneering location-based social discovery service launched in the late 2000s. The mobile application allowed users to "check in" to various locations, write reviews, and share their experiences, effectively creating stories about their activities. It competed with services like Foursquare and Gowalla by focusing on personalized recommendations and creating "Societies" – user-generated guides around specific interests. In April 2011, Groupon acquired Pelago, Inc., primarily for its engineering talent and location-based technology. Following the acquisition, the Whrrl service was shut down as the team was integrated into Groupon's operations.
