The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is a cabinet-level executive department of the United States federal government. Established as its current cabinet-level entity in 1989, its mission is to fulfill President Lincoln's promise "To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan." The VA operates the nation's largest integrated healthcare system, provides benefits including disability compensation, education assistance, and home loans, and manages a national network of cemeteries for veterans.
