THE DAYTON COMPANY
Information by Research TrustFinance
The Dayton Company, founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1902, was a major American department store chain known for its quality merchandise and focus on customer service in the Upper Midwest. In 1962, the company diversified by founding the discount retail chain Target. The Dayton Company later merged with Detroit's J.L. Hudson Company to form the Dayton-Hudson Corporation. While expanding the Target brand nationwide, the corporation eventually prioritized its discount retail division. In 2000, Dayton-Hudson was renamed Target Corporation, and its department store division (including the Dayton's stores) was sold, ultimately being rebranded as Macy's.
