However, it was later revealed to be a complex criminal enterprise and Ponzi-like scheme orchestrated by its CEO, Alexander Chatfield Burns. The company used investor funds to acquire insurance companies and then systematically looted them by swapping their high-quality assets for illiquid, worthless securities that Southport Lane controlled.
