Skycoin is an open-source blockchain project that started development in 2011. Its mission is to address the perceived flaws in Bitcoin and other first-generation cryptocurrencies, such as centralization of mining and scalability issues. The project is built around its own unique consensus algorithm called "Obelisk," which aims to be more secure and energy-efficient than Proof-of-Work. The Skycoin ecosystem includes its native cryptocurrency (SKY), a decentralized internet infrastructure (Skywire), its own blockchain platform for applications (Fiber), and proprietary hardware like the Skyminer and Skywallet.
