Launched in July 2014, Realcoin was a project created by the company of the same name to facilitate the creation of cryptocurrencies backed by fiat currencies. Its first and primary product was a US Dollar-backed token. In November 2014, the company and project rebranded to Tether, with its stablecoin token becoming known as USDT. Today, Tether's mission is to provide stability to the crypto ecosystem by offering a digital token that is pegged 1:1 to a specific fiat currency, thereby giving traders a low-volatility asset without needing to exit the crypto market.
