Plutus Payroll Australia Pty Ltd was established as a payroll contractor company, ostensibly providing services to manage payroll, tax, and superannuation for independent contractors and their employers. In reality, the company was the primary vehicle for a massive and sophisticated criminal syndicate that defrauded the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) of more than AUD $105 million between 2014 and 2017. The scheme involved accepting gross payments from employers, paying contractors their net wages, and then siphoning off the Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) withholding tax and Goods and Services Tax (GST) that was due to the ATO. The company was placed into liquidation in 2017 following a major investigation by the Australian Federal Police and the ATO, leading to the arrest and conviction of its key directors and conspirators.
