Pay.UK is responsible for running the UK's national retail payment infrastructure, including major systems like Bacs Payment Schemes (Direct Debit and Bacs Direct Credit), the Faster Payments Service (real-time payments), and the Image Clearing System (digital cheque processing). Formed in 2017 by consolidating the operators of these individual schemes, Pay.UK's mission is to enable a vibrant UK economy by delivering best-in-class payment infrastructure, services, and standards for the benefit of every person, business, and community. It operates as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee and is supervised by the Bank of England and the Payment Systems Regulator.
