Founded in 2017 by Hanu Agbodje, Patricia started as an e-commerce platform for trading unused gift cards and later evolved into a major cryptocurrency exchange in Africa, particularly in Nigeria. The company's mission was to make cryptocurrency accessible and easy to use for everyone. However, in May 2023, Patricia announced it was the victim of a significant security breach, resulting in the loss of customer funds. Consequently, it suspended all withdrawal services and later revealed a controversial plan to convert customers' outstanding balances into a proprietary debt token called Patricia Token (PTK), with a promise of future redemption.
