The National Housing Bank (NHB) was established on July 9, 1988, under the National Housing Bank Act, 1987. It is an apex financial institution for housing, wholly owned by the Government of India. NHB's primary mission is to operate as a principal agency to promote housing finance institutions at local and regional levels and to provide financial and other support to such institutions. It regulates and supervises Housing Finance Companies (HFCs), provides them with refinancing, and works towards promoting a sound, healthy, viable, and cost-effective housing finance system for all segments of the population in India.
