Established in 1963, the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) serves as the central monetary authority for the country. Its primary mission is to maintain price and exchange rate stability, hold and manage the country's foreign exchange reserves, and promote a sound, efficient, and inclusive financial system. The NBE is also responsible for licensing, supervising, and regulating banks, insurance companies, and microfinance institutions. Furthermore, it acts as the banker, fiscal agent, and advisor to the government and has the sole right to issue the national currency, the Ethiopian Birr.
