Founded in 2005, Metaweb Technologies, Inc. was a pioneering company in the field of semantic web technology. Its flagship product was Freebase, a large collaborative knowledge base consisting of structured data collected from many sources. The company's mission was to create a global, open-source database of the world's information. In July 2010, Google acquired Metaweb to utilize its technology and data to enhance its search engine results through the Google Knowledge Graph. Following the acquisition, the Freebase service was gradually wound down and officially shut down in 2016, with its data being migrated to Wikidata.
