Greensill Capital
Information by Research Trustfinance
Founded in 2011 by Lex Greensill, Greensill Capital was a leading provider of supply chain finance, also known as reverse factoring. The company's mission was to "make finance fairer" by unlocking working capital for businesses globally. It worked by paying a company's suppliers earlier than their contracted terms (at a small discount) and then collecting the full invoiced amount from the company at a later date. Greensill packaged these short-term loans into securities which were then sold to investors, notably through funds managed by Credit Suisse. After a period of rapid growth and high-profile backing, the company collapsed into insolvency in March 2021 amid concerns over its valuation and its heavy credit exposure to a small number of clients.
