Great Lakes Educational Loan Services, Inc. was a prominent non-profit organization founded in 1967, which grew to become one of the largest servicers of federal and private student loans in the United States, operating on behalf of the U.S. Department of Education. Headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, its mission was to help students and families successfully manage their educational debt. In 2018, the company was acquired by Nelnet, and the full transition of all borrower accounts from the Great Lakes platform to Nelnet was completed by 2023, officially retiring the Great Lakes brand in loan servicing.
