General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re) was formed in 1972 as a government-owned company to supervise and control the general insurance business in India. Following industry restructuring in 2000, GIC Re was renotified as the Indian Reinsurer and now serves as the country's sole national reinsurer. It provides reinsurance support to direct general insurance companies in India and has expanded its operations globally, with a presence in the SAARC region, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. GIC Re underwrites a wide range of risks including property, motor, agriculture, marine, engineering, aviation, health, and liability.
