Founded in 1926 in Tappahannock, Virginia, Essex Bank grew to become a prominent community bank serving central and eastern Virginia and parts of Maryland. Operating under its parent company, Community Bankers Trust Corporation, the bank focused on delivering personalized financial services, including personal banking, business banking, commercial loans, and wealth management. In 2021, Community Bankers Trust Corporation and its subsidiary Essex Bank were acquired by United Bankshares, Inc. Subsequently, all Essex Bank branches and operations were rebranded and integrated into United Bank.
