Founded in 2011 and based in Calgary, Alberta, CAVIRTEX (Canadian Virtual Exchange) was a pioneering Bitcoin trading platform in Canada. It allowed users to buy and sell bitcoins using Canadian dollars, establishing itself as the country's oldest and, at its peak, largest exchange by volume. The company experienced a significant security breach in 2014 but managed to cover the losses. In April 2015, CAVIRTEX was acquired by the US-based exchange Coinsetter. Subsequently, in January 2016, Kraken acquired both Coinsetter and CAVIRTEX, migrating all user accounts to its global platform and effectively shutting down the CAVIRTEX brand and operations.
