Originally founded as a savings bank (caja de ahorros), Bilbao Bizkaia Kutxa (bbk) underwent a significant transformation following the restructuring of the Spanish financial system. It is now a banking foundation whose primary mission is to promote sustainable economic and social development within its home territory of Biscay. BBK manages the social and community projects ("Obra Social") funded by the dividends from its majority ownership stake in Kutxabank, the commercial bank created from the merger of BBK and other Basque savings banks. The foundation focuses its efforts on areas such as dependency and disability, social inclusion, education, culture, and entrepreneurship.
