Founded in 1988, it operated under a profit-for-members model, focusing on providing retirement savings solutions for workers in industries like farming, agriculture, and other regional sectors. On April 1, 2019, AustSafe Super completed a merger with Sunsuper to create a larger fund with greater scale and resources. The combined entity, Sunsuper, later merged with QSuper to form Australian Retirement Trust, which is now one of Australia's largest superannuation funds.
