Universal American
Information by Research Trustfinance
Founded in 1986, Universal American Corp. was a publicly-traded health and life insurance holding company focused on the senior market. The company's primary business was providing a broad portfolio of senior-focused health insurance and benefit programs, most notably Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare Part D prescription drug plans. It also operated Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) in partnership with physicians. In May 2017, Universal American was acquired by WellCare Health Plans, Inc. for approximately $800 million, and its operations and plans were integrated into WellCare's business. Subsequently, WellCare itself was acquired by Centene Corporation in January 2020, effectively ending the Universal American brand.
