Originally an acronym for Maryland Bank National Association, MBNA was founded in the USA in 1982 and launched in the United Kingdom in 1993. It grew to become one of the UK's largest credit card issuers, known for its "affinity" cards co-branded with sports teams, charities, and universities. In 2017, MBNA's UK and Irish business was acquired by Lloyds Banking Group from Bank of America. Today, MBNA operates as a trading style of Lloyds Bank plc, continuing to offer a range of credit card products directly to UK consumers.
