The Government Employees Insurance Company (GEICO) is a private American auto insurance company that is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. Founded in 1936 by Leo and Lillian Goodwin, GEICO's original mission was to provide insurance policies directly to federal government employees and their families. It has since expanded to serve a wide private-sector customer base. The company is known for its direct-to-consumer sales model, which bypasses the use of independent agents, and for its extensive advertising featuring the GEICO Gecko. Today, it is one of the largest auto insurers in the United States, also offering property, life, and other lines of insurance.
