The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) was established in 1991 to help build a new, post-Cold War era in Central and Eastern Europe. It is an international financial institution that uses investment as a tool to help build market economies. The EBRD invests primarily in private sector clients whose needs cannot be fully met by the market, promoting entrepreneurship and policy reform. The bank is owned by 72 countries from five continents, as well as the European Union and the European Investment Bank.
