Information by Research TrustFinance
Founded in 1944 through the merger of the Abbey Road and the National building societies, Abbey National grew to become one of the largest mortgage lenders in the United Kingdom. It demutualised in 1989, floating on the London Stock Exchange and becoming a public limited company (plc). The bank expanded its services to include personal banking, savings, and insurance. In 2004, Abbey National was acquired by the Spanish banking giant, Santander Group. The Abbey brand was phased out and officially rebranded as Santander UK in January 2010, integrating its operations into Santander's global network.
