It established itself as a low-cost, deep-discount online broker in Canada, catering to active traders and self-directed investors seeking direct market access. In 2017, the firm was acquired by CI Financial Corp. and was subsequently rebranded as CI Direct Trading. In a further industry consolidation, CI's brokerage businesses, including CI Direct Trading, were acquired by Aviso Wealth in 2023 and merged into its Qtrade Direct Investing platform, effectively ending the Virtual Brokers brand lineage.
