Established on 1 January 1993, the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) is the independent central bank of Slovakia. Since Slovakia's adoption of the euro on 1 January 2009, the NBS has been an integral part of the Eurosystem. Its primary objective is to maintain price stability within the euro area. The bank's key functions also include supervising the domestic financial market, managing foreign exchange reserves, issuing euro banknotes and coins, and promoting the smooth operation of payment systems.
