Cryptopia
Information by Research Trustfinance
Founded in 2014 in New Zealand, Cryptopia was a cryptocurrency exchange that gained popularity for listing a vast number of altcoins and new, smaller-cap cryptocurrencies, which were often unavailable on larger exchanges. In January 2019, the exchange suffered a significant hack, resulting in the theft of an estimated $16 million USD worth of digital assets. Unable to recover from the loss and determine the extent of the damages, the company halted operations and was placed into liquidation in May 2019, with professional services firm Grant Thornton appointed as the liquidator to manage the complex process of identifying and returning assets to account holders.
