Cognition Financial Corporation was an American company specializing in education finance. Its main business lines included originating, servicing, and selling private student loans, as well as managing college savings plans. Founded to help families finance higher education, the company was later acquired by First Marblehead Corporation in 2011. In 2012, the decision was made to wind down its loan origination business, and the company officially ceased originating new loans in 2013, subsequently selling and transferring its existing loan portfolio to other servicers.
