Founded in 1872 as Branch and Hadley, BB&T (Branch Banking and Trust Company) grew to become one of the largest financial services holding companies in the United States. It offered a comprehensive suite of consumer and commercial banking, securities brokerage, asset management, mortgage, and insurance products and services. In December 2019, BB&T completed a "merger of equals" with SunTrust Banks, Inc., creating Truist Financial Corporation, which is now one of the largest commercial banks in the U.S. The BB&T brand has since been retired and all operations, branches, and services have been fully integrated under the Truist name and brand.
