Bitcoin Gold (BTG) is an open-source, decentralized cryptocurrency project that was created via a hard fork from the Bitcoin blockchain in October 2017. Its primary mission is to "make bitcoin decentralized again" by changing the proof-of-work algorithm from Bitcoin's SHA-256 to Equihash (now Equihash-BTG). This change was intended to make mining resistant to ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) hardware, allowing more individuals to mine effectively with consumer-grade GPUs, thereby promoting a more decentralized and fair distribution of mining rewards.
