Established in 1942, the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) is an independent agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Its mission is to provide retirement security and other benefits to public servants in Virginia, including teachers, state employees, and employees of participating political subdivisions. As one of the largest public pension funds in the United States, VRS manages a diverse investment portfolio to fund the defined benefit plans, defined contribution plans, and other benefits for hundreds of thousands of members, retirees, and beneficiaries.
