Founded in 1992, PrivatBank was one of Ukraine's first private commercial banks. It grew to become the country's leading financial institution, known for its innovation, particularly the development of the "Privat24" digital banking platform. In December 2016, due to a massive capital shortfall, the bank was nationalized by the Government of Ukraine to protect the interests of its 20 million clients and preserve the stability of the country's financial system.
