Founded in 2012 in Helsinki, Finland, by Jeremias Kangas, LocalBitcoins was a pioneering peer-to-peer (P2P) Bitcoin trading platform. Its mission was to "bring Bitcoin everywhere" by allowing users worldwide to trade Bitcoin directly with each other using a vast array of local payment methods. The platform provided security for traders through an escrow service and a reputation system. After more than ten years of operation and serving millions of customers, the company announced in February 2023 that it would be discontinuing its service, citing a challenging market environment during the "crypto winter."
