Established in 1993 as Korea Housing Guarantee, the company was restructured and rebranded in 2015 to become the Korea Housing & Urban Guarantee Corporation (HUG). As a state-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, HUG's primary mission is to contribute to the housing stability and quality of life for South Korean citizens. It achieves this by being the sole provider of housing guarantees, including those for housing project financing, housing completion, and "Jeonse" lease deposits. Additionally, HUG plays a crucial role in managing the National Housing Fund and supporting urban regeneration projects to revitalize declining urban areas.
