Originally founded as a Charitable Trust, Jamii Bora Bank began its journey to empower the underserved in Kenya. It evolved into one of the country's leading microfinance institutions before obtaining a commercial banking license from the Central Bank of Kenya in 2010. The bank's mission was to provide accessible and affordable financial solutions, with a strong focus on SMEs, micro-entrepreneurs, and community-based groups. After facing financial challenges, the Co-operative Bank of Kenya acquired a 90% stake in the institution in August 2020. Following the acquisition, Jamii Bora Bank was officially rebranded to Kingdom Bank Limited and continues to operate as a subsidiary of the Co-op Bank Group.
