First Union Corporation was a prominent financial services company headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions in the 1980s and 1990s, it grew to become the sixth-largest bank in the United States. Its operations encompassed a wide range of services including retail and commercial banking, investment banking, and asset management. In 2001, First Union merged with Wachovia Corporation in a major deal, with the combined entity taking the Wachovia name. The new Wachovia was subsequently acquired by Wells Fargo & Company in 2008 during the global financial crisis.
