CyberCash
Information by Research TrustFinance
Founded in 1994 by Dan Lynch and William N. Melton, CyberCash, Inc. was one of the first companies to develop a secure payment system for e-commerce. It aimed to be the "cash register for the Internet," offering services for credit card processing, micropayments (via its "CyberCoin" system), and electronic checks. Despite its innovative technology and early start in the dot-com era, the company faced significant competition and struggled to achieve profitability. CyberCash filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2001, and its assets, including its payment gateway business, were subsequently acquired by VeriSign, which later sold them to PayPal in 2005.
